The histrionics of Margaret, class structure, unexplained deaths, shadowy characters and people not whom they purport to be, all seemed determined to bring the Haldanes down and Duncan can only fall with them. Starting on the death of Sibylla when asked by his fatherly sergeant, Donnie Munro, to track down Patrick O’Discoll in relation to an assault, Duncan’s awareness grows of the web of intrigue connecting his past affairs with the Haldane’s to the horror of deaths he may have unwittingly caused.
